The new generation of related sedans BMW M3 and M4 coupe were supposed to be presented last year, but their debut was postponed for almost a year: the development of production versions took engineers a little longer than planned. Nevertheless, the company did not refuse the new corporate design with huge nostrils of the radiator grille, and they went not only to the charged “four” (recall that they appeared on the standard model after the generation change), but also to the M3 sedan. However, from the original cars, the new “M’s”, of course, differ not only in appearance: the company shared details about the equipment, the list of modifications and prices.
The exterior is designed in the traditional style for M-models: extended wheel arches, aggressive body kit with large air intakes and diffuser, four exhaust pipes, a minimum of chrome parts, a spoiler on the trunk lid, special side mirror housings and alloy wheels with a diameter of 18 inches in front and 19 inches on the rear axle (for Competition versions — 19 and 20 inches, respectively). The carbon fiber roof of the new M3 and M4 is already “in the base”, and the heavier panoramic one is offered as a free option. Inside, there are sports seats and a steering wheel with M Mode keys, a red engine start button, and new interior trim options. Also, for an additional fee, lightweight chairs with a carbon fiber base are offered for 9.5 kg.
Both cars were not only larger, but also heavier than their predecessors: the weight gain exceeded 100 kg! The curb weight of the new BMW M3 and M4 is 1705 and 1700 kg (against 1595 and 1572 kg for cars of the previous generation), and in the Competition version it reaches 1730 and 1725 kg, respectively. However, the engine output has also increased: both models are equipped with three-liter in-line S58 biturboshesterki from the BMW X3 M and X4 m crossovers. The power of the basic version is 480 HP, and for the Competition modification it is increased to 510 HP, but the torque in both cases is the same — 650 Nm (although the crossovers have a peak of 600 Nm). For comparison, the S55 engine on the previous BMW M3/M4 even in the Competition version produced 450 HP and 550 Nm, and the small — scale M4 GTS-500 HP and 600 Nm.
The new BMW M3 and M4 retained rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission, but the Competition versions only have an eight-speed “automatic” M Steptronic, which replaced the previous “robot” with two clutches. The dynamic characteristics of sedans and coupes are almost identical: both cars accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, while the more powerful versions with the Competition prefix take 3.9 s. the Maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, although when choosing the optional M driver’s package, it increases to 290 km/h. As promised, a little later in the range for the first time there will be all-wheel drive modifications with a multi — disc clutch connecting the front wheels and drift mode-their release is scheduled for the summer of 2021.
The engineers also worked on driving habits: adaptive suspension, reinforced body and chassis, additional struts, stiffer subframes and a 38 mm extended track on the front axle are designed to ensure perfect handling both on the track and on public roads. Other features include an adjustable stabilization system, M Servotronic steering and an optional M Drive Professional package with the new M Traction Control system, which allows the driver to choose from as many as ten sensitivity settings: according to the developers, it helps the pilot find “the perfect balance of the race car’s recoil and directional stability”. In addition, the vehicles are equipped with six-piston brake calipers and discs with a diameter of 380 mm in the front, as well as single-piston calipers and brake discs with a diameter of 370 mm on the rear axle. Carbon-ceramic brakes with gold-colored calipers and increased to 400 mm front and 380 mm rear brake discs will be offered for a surcharge.
