The reincarnation of the legendary BMW 8 series was presented to the world community in the most suitable place for this – as part of a special event held on June 15, 2018 at the legendary track near the city of Le Mans. It is worth noting that a year earlier, the German manufacturer demonstrated a pre-production concept at the Villa d’este elegance competition. The final version received an extremely powerful technical stuffing, a luxurious and functional interior, as well as a fascinating design. The silhouette of the new product is woven from rapid thin lines. The long hood, sloping roof section and embossed vyshtampovki on the body panels create a sense of speed and elegance. The front is made in a classic style. The eye is caught by narrow elongated headlamps with angular sections of led daytime running lights and several focusing lenses. The radiator grille consists of two fused huge “nostrils”, taken away by relief vertical ribs. As for the stern, it also turned out to be very interesting. I would like to note the slightly upturned edge of the fifth door, brake lights with led filling and two huge exhaust pipes.
The BMW 8 series is a premium sports four-seat coupe. Its overall dimensions are: length 4851 mm, width 1902 mm, height 1346 mm, and wheelbase-2822 mm. The amount of ground clearance depends on the type of engine installed on the car and varies from 121 to 128 millimeters. Despite its sporty nature, the model has a relatively roomy trunk. In the standard position, there is as much as 420 liters of usable space in the rear. Moreover, for the transport of long loads, half of the rear sofa can be folded and open access to the interior.
The car is built on the innovative modular CLAR platform. It has a forward longitudinal arrangement of the power unit and a large percentage of high-strength steels and aluminum alloys. Moreover, part of the power structure is made of magnesium alloy, and the transmission tunnel is made of carbon fiber. As for the suspension, it is completely independent. There are two wishbones in the front and a multi – link in the back. By default, it is equipped with electronically controlled shock absorbers, coil springs and anti-roll bars. As an option, you can buy an active stabilization system.
At the start of sales, the eighth series will be equipped with two different engines, branded eight-speed automatic variable transmissions and exclusively all-four-wheel drive. Thanks to the diverse engines and a fairly versatile transmission, the model boasts excellent performance.
Diesel versions of the BMW 8 series will be equipped with an inline turbocharged three-liter six. Thanks to an advanced boost system, it produces 320 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 680 Nm of torque in the range from 1,750 to 2,250 rpm. In this configuration, the coupe accelerates to the first hundred in 4.9 seconds and has an electronic limiter at 250 kilometers per hour. Despite this dynamic, in quiet driving modes, fuel consumption is quite democratic – 6.2 liters of diesel fuel per hundred kilometers of travel in a mixed cycle.
For fans of hotter, the manufacturer offers a real petrol V-shaped eight with turbocharging. The 4.4-liter volume allowed the engineers to squeeze out 530 horsepower in a small interval between 5500 and 6000 rpm, as well as get 750 Nm in a very wide range-1800-4600 rpm. Such a herd under the hood and a good shelf of torque allow the eight to shoot up to a hundred in 3.7 seconds. Unfortunately, its speed limit will also be limited at 250 km / h. As for fuel consumption, if you drive slowly, it will be 10.5 liters of gasoline in the combined cycle.
